Safe Space

2021

Working with a fashion designer, I developed a novel form of creating patterns for pattern cutting based garment design. We generated patterns that react to body movements. These patterns symbolise the duality of emotions inside confined spaces - the desire to be released or the peace found from within.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO WRAP IN THE SHACKLES OF CONFINEMENT?

Adult solitude is considered to be a serious issue. Taking these emotions into consideration, we wanted to design patterns that react to the struggles inside a confined place. With my collaborator inside, different crumbling on the cloth forms were noted as she moved inside the confined cloth.

To create patterns, I made a flex sensor using Velostat, a conductive fabric. Every time the sensor bends, a pattern is created from the signal sent from Arduino processor. The bend data is mapped to patterns in creative coding software Processing. One such pattern has been presented below which was projected on the cloth.
